What is the Ignition Interlock?

Posted By The Law Office of Timothy Hessinger || 16-Apr-2014

The ignition interlock is a devise that is required to be installed on a person's vehicle if they are convicted of DUI under certain circumstances. The device requires an in vehicle breath test before the vehicle can be started and requires retests at random or specified intervals during the time the vehicle is running.

The ignition interlock is required to be installed on your vehicle if any of the following occur:

  • 1st DUI conviction if the breath test is .15 or above, or a minor was in the vehicle requires an ignition interlock for at least 6 months.
  • 2nd DUI conviction requires an ignition interlock for at least 1 year.
  • 2nd DUI conviction if the breath test is .15 or above, or there was a minor in the vehicle requires an ignition interlock for at least 2 years.
  • 3rd DUI conviction requires an ignition interlock for at least 2 years.
  • 4 or more DUI convictions requires an ignition interlock for at least 5 years.

The ignition interlock requirement is usually ordered by the court at the time of sentencing and is also required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. There are three approved ignition interlock providers in Florida.

  • Guardian Interlock - guardianinterlock.com
  • Alcohol Countermeasure Systems Corp. - Alcolockusa.com/florida
  • Smart Start - Smartstartinc.com

The cost for the ignition interlock is as follows:

  • Install $95.50
  • Monthly monitoring $72.50
  • Monthly insurance $5
  • Removal $25

See the video for a demonstration on the use of the ignition interlock.
